White pelicans are frequently found on fresh water and occasionally on salt water, brown pelicans are on salt water mostly. Pelicans do not have nostrils or holes (nares) on their bills to breathe rather they breathe through their mouths. They are large robust birds with colorful personalities and do not make much noise. Here in the Verde Valley it is not uncommon to see white pelicans or seagulls on occasion. Summer storms can blow them off course and due to the long flights they often are hungry and dehydrated. It is important if one is found to bring them to a licensed rehabilitator for proper care so they can continue their journey and catch up with the flock.
